Have you noticed a change in your air quality at home? Even though we don’t think much about them, it’s important to change the AC filters in our home almost every month. Dirty filters are riddled with dust and germs, which are then passed through your system and into the air inside your home.
Regularly changing your filters will improve the air quality in your home and also extend the life of your AC unit. Changing filters is important, but the type of filters you use is important, too. Check out the list below and see which filter is right for your home.
Generic Filter
Most people use generic filters for their home. While they are inexpensive, they may not trap as much of the dust and bacteria in your home.
Pleated Filter
Pleated filters are more expensive than generic filters, but they are able to catch more of the air contaminants than a generic filter, because of its creased design. It can keep plenty of contaminants out of your system, which will extend the life of it.
Electrostatic/Permanent Filter
Generic and pleated filters are disposable, but electrostatic filters are permanent. Instead of replacing the filter, you can just wash it regularly. These filters use static electricity to trap dirt and dust without restricting the airflow to your system. Electrostatic filters are a great option if you have pets in your home, or if you suffer from allergies or asthma. Even though these are permanent, they should be washed out regularly.
HEPA Filters
HEPA filters are generally used in schools and hospitals because they can filter out germs, bacteria and viruses. Even though they are the highest quality air filter, they are still relatively inexpensive. But like any other filter, it is important to clean it regularly so air flow isn’t restricted.
