6 Summer Savings Tips

6 Summer Savings Tips

A New Jersey summer can be a scorcher. Trying to beat the heat and keep your home cool can get expensive from high utility bills. A/C is a must-have for these hot summer months, but there are some ways to save money and energy without giving up comfort.

1. Replace air filters.

Air filters can get dirty quickly, so it is important to change them regularly to keep your air clean and insure that there is adequate air flow. Filters should be changed monthly.

2. Keep blinds and curtains closed during the day.

During the heat of the day, the sun can heat up your home. Keeping blinds and curtains closed can help keep out extra heat.

3. Use fans.

Fans will help circulate air throughout your home while also creating a draft, making the room feel cooler. By using ceiling fans (or any type of fan), you can set the thermostat up to four degrees higher without sacrificing any comfort.

4. Install a programmable or smart thermostat.

A programmable thermostat lets you set the thermostat for different times of the day. For example, at night you could set it for 70 degrees to stay cool, but during the day while you are not home, you can set it for 75 degrees to save energy. A smart thermostat will “learn” your behaviors throughout the week and set itself according to your schedule. It also lets you control your system from anywhere while using an app on your phone or tablet.

5. Avoid using appliances during the heat of the day.

Appliances like your oven, washer, dryer and dishwasher emit heat when you use them, so avoid using them during the day when it is hot outside. Running these appliances can create more heat in your home, making your A/C run more to cool your home.

6. Schedule routine maintenance for your A/C unit.

You should have routine maintenance done on your unit twice per year. Getting an A/C Tune-Up assures that your unit is running efficiently, and it can reduce the risk for costly repairs later on.
