Let’s face it…we’re all looking for ways to save money and save the planet. So, as the temperatures drop in New Jersey, residents are looking at the best ways to do both. That’s when we start talking about converting your heating system.
Why Convert?
Easiest answer: To save money. Going with gas is a cheaper alternative than oil, and can be more reliable than electricity.
Using natural gas is also better for the environment. Natural gas is more efficient than the use of coal or electricity. It is a raw product and does not require conversion to electricity. It is the only heating system that is approaching close to 100 percent efficiency. Plus, there’s no more concern of your oil tank freezing up in the winter, nor the stress of making sure your tank is always full.
Ask Yourself…
1. Can you convert?
Before any big moves can be made with your heating system, it’s most important to make sure you actually can convert to gas. Check with your local utility company if there is already a gas main under your street. If not, work with the utility company and your neighbors to see what you can do to get one.
2. Is the upfront cost of switching worth the investment?
This is when it’s important to give us a call. We will sit down with you and discuss all the possibilities of converting your heating system, the upfront costs and the maintenance costs. We want you to not only be comfortable in your home but comfortable in your decision.
Versions of Conversion?
So, if you’re going to call Heating Specialties, what are we going to find in your home currently? Are you looking to convert heat from oil to gas? Electric to gas? Propane to gas?
Oil to Gas
If you’re used to burning oil for heat, it’s not a stretch to switch to burning natural gas. One way this is done is by fitting your existing oil-burning furnace with a gas conversion burner. The other way is to replace your current furnace with a gas-burning unit, which is best if your existing furnace is more than 10 years old.
Electric to Gas
First, we’ll look at what type of electric heat you’re using in your home. If your home has electric radiators or baseboard heaters, specialists will have to add ductwork to your home, which can be expensive. And, in some cases, it might be impossible.
If you use an electric furnace or heat pump, what we call forced-air heating, it’s easier because the ductwork is already there, and we can tie into that ductwork, making it cost-effective.
Propane to Gas
If your home has piping for propane, it will need to be re-piped with larger lines. This is not a DIY project, though, and cutting corners is not recommended with this conversion. Like oil, you will have an empty propane tank that will have to be taken care of, and you will need to look at converting your appliances.
